Music - 'Every Child a Musician'

Implementation and Purpose of study from the National Curriculum

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high- quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

Intent

To ensure all pupils will benefit from an exciting, rich, broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum that is matched appropriately to their ages, abilities and aptitudes.  Ensuring the progressive development of music knowledge and skills and for pupils to develp a love of music. 

Implementation

  • Use of End Point Curriculum to keep outcomes focussed and clear.
  • Continuation of the 'focus composer/time period' to enhance critical appreciation of music and a variety of musical styles exposure. 
  • New topic focuses to support/enhance curriculum learning and to ensure rich,broad and balanced curriculum coverage.
  • Regular meeting with subject leader and specialist teacher to ensure learning is exciting and challenging.
  • End Point Curriculum - within both key stages the core focuses can be linked and transferred between any curriculum area where there is a link or specific teaching need/skill or element e.g songs/compositions that are subject specific.
  • KS2 - all have access to and use the 'MECLA Puzzle Pieces' to enable all students ,of all abilities and instruments, to be able to perform together as a unique ensemble.
  • Annual data will be collected and analysed to ensure continued progress. 
  • Enrichment opportunities for all year groups throughout the year to use, apply and experience additional musical events i.e workshops, festivals, theatre performances. 

Impact

All pupils will have a secure knowledge of the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant curriculum programmes of study for their key stage. They will have the ability and confidence to create,compose and transfer these skills to other areas of the curriculum. They will develop a love and appreciation of music and those musicians and composers who have influenced/shaped and shape the world we live in. Pupils will be creative and curious and be armed with the resilience, skills and knowledge to explore the musical world around them.
