Languages

Purpose of study from the National Curriculum

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Intent

To ensure that all our pupils benefit from an exciting, rich, broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum that is matched to their age, ability and aptitude. Ensuring the progressive development  of language knowledge and skills and for the pupils to develop a love of the subject. We will  teach our pupils to understand and respond to spoken and written foreign language from a variety of authentic sources. We will enable our pupils to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say.

Implementation

  • Use of the End Point Curriculum to keep outcomes focussed and clear.
  • Annual data will be collected and analysed to ensure continued progress.Target pupils and areas identified and support for both staff and pupils will be implemented if required.
  • Our pupils will be given opportunities to listen attentively to spoken language and show their understanding by joining in and responding.
  • The focus of study in modern languages will be on the practical communication and teaching will provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language. We will be providing our pupils with exciting, challenging and engaging learning scenarios.
  • Teaching will enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing. These opportunities will focus on familiar and routine matters and encourage the children's use of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary.

Impact

At Gorsewood we will foster our pupils curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world they live in.  We will provide a strong foundation for learning further languages and opportunities for enhancing/extending prior knowledge learned. This in turn will provide a solid foundation for their later education journey.  It will provide an opening to other nations, cultures and foster our pupil's curiosity and deepen thier understanding of the world. Our pupils will build a developing ability to understand another language and to communicate in it.
